Sunday Worship
10:45 am in the Sanctuary
Come as you are to worship.
No matter whether you grew up in the church or are trying church for the first time, you are welcome here. No matter whether you put on a suit and a hat or your blue jeans, you are welcome here.
Worship Style
Our worship style is liturgical with hymns, responsive readings, communal prayers, litanies, scripture readings, and preaching. Our choir blesses us with musical introits and responses which focuses us on the worship themes and draw our spirits closer to God.
Although the pastor and liturgist verbally lead worship and ushers and greeters make sure everything runs smoothly, every person who is present in worship participates in worshipping God!
What Do I Do?
When you come into the church, help yourself to some coffee and donuts which are found in the waiting room. After you are done snacking, enter the sanctuary through the double doors and pick up a bulletin from one of the ushers. Find a seat where you are comfortable and introduce yourself to those around you.
If you would like to use a hearing assist device, please ask an usher for assistance. The * on the bulletin indicates that the congregation should rise in body or in spirit. We use two hymnals: The United Methodist Hymnal and The Faith We Sing. Capital bold letters indicate that the congregation will read the printed response together.
Children of all ages are welcome in our worship. We want them to be part of the faith community. Adults are invited to pick up a activity bag located immediately inside the sanctuary for their child to play with during worship. Ushers will also give children a special bulletin with pictures to color. If for some reason, you need to take your child out of the sanctuary during worship, you may take them to the library located directly across the hall from the sanctuary. In the library, there are comfortable chairs and children’s books as well as a speaker so you can still hear the worship service. Child care is also available. Ask an usher for assistance.
After worship, everyone is invited to enjoy visiting and fellowship in the waiting room and in the hallway!
The Sacraments of Communion and Baptism
We celebrate communion on the first Sunday of every month and on special occasions. Since United Methodists we have an open table, if you feel an invitation from the Spirit, you are always welcome to come forward and receive communion regardless of your faith background. We believe you may experience the grace of God for the first time at the communion table.
We usually take communion by a method called intinction. You will receive a piece of bread. Dip the bread into the cup. You may respond by saying, “Thanks be to God!” or “Amen.” You may kneel at the altar rail and pray, returning to your seat when you are ready.
We celebrate baptism whenever a person feels compelled to make a public profession of faith in Jesus Christ and a commitment to living a life of Christian discipline. We enter the body of Christ through our baptism.
Both children (even infants) and adults can be baptized. We are open to different methods of baptism including sprinkling, pouring, and immersion.
Special Worship Services
During times of the liturgical year, such as Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter we gather for special worship services during the week. Call or email the church office for more information about those services (449-4364 or info@wilkesblvdumc.org).
